Spotify Explores AI-Generated Playlists Based on User Prompts

Spotify is delving deeper into the realm of artificial intelligence. Following the launch of an AI-powered DJ earlier this year, the streaming giant is now experimenting with the automatic generation of playlists based on user prompts.

Product designer and hashtag inventor, Chris Messina, discovered code snippets hinting at this feature in Spotify’s backend. The code referred to a feature called “AI Playlist” and included the phrase “Get playlists based on your prompts.” This potential new feature could function as a Spotify-specific version of ChatGPT. Messina also speculated that this feature might integrate with Spotify Blend, where two users combine their music preferences to generate algorithmically curated playlists.

A Spotify spokesperson stated, “At Spotify, we are constantly iterating and ideating to improve our product offering and offer value to users. But we don’t comment on speculation around possible new features and do not have anything new to share at this time.”

Spotify had previously experimented with description-based playlists through Niche Mixes, but these were confirmed not to be AI-driven. Instead, they relied on Spotify’s personalization algorithm. In February, Spotify introduced an AI-powered DJ, which plays songs it believes users will like, occasionally interjecting with comments to enhance the music discovery experience.
